Imagine a user in Kuala Lumpur asking ChatGPT to plan a family weekend in Langkawi, budget and school holidays included. The answer lists a few resorts. Underneath it, a small card marked “Sponsored” shows a hotel's name, a photo and a link.

The card is now live here. OpenAI's Southeast Asia and Taiwan announcement brought ChatGPT Ads to Malaysia on 23 September 2026.

Our take is simple. ChatGPT Ads are worth understanding now and worth a small test for some categories, but they're no reason to pull budget out of Google yet. Here's how we'd think it through if you run a Malaysian business.

Who Actually Sees ChatGPT Ads in Malaysia

The audience is narrower than the headlines suggest. According to the OpenAI Help Center guide to ads in ChatGPT, only Free and Go users see ads. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts stay ad-free. The ad sits below the answer, carries a “Sponsored” label and, per OpenAI, has no influence on what ChatGPT says.

In our view, that plan split is the first thing to think about. Students, price-conscious shoppers and casual everyday users probably sit on the free tiers. The senior manager whose company pays for a Business account won't see your ad at all.

If your buyer is the second person, ChatGPT Ads probably aren't your channel yet.

Why a ChatGPT Ad Works Differently from a Google Search Ad

A Google search ad catches someone mid-thought. They type four words, and the ad has a second or two to match them.

A ChatGPT ad appears much later in the buyer's thinking. The sponsored card only shows up after the person has explained who they're buying for, what they can spend and what rules an option out. They're further along, and a keyword match alone won't carry the ad.

What we'd tell a client is that the card is the easy part. It has room for a name, a title, a line of copy, an image and a link, so the landing page does most of the persuading. In our GEO work with Malaysian brands, the pages that get picked up in AI answers tend to be the clear, specific ones. They name the service, state the location and answer the obvious question directly. We expect those same pages to convert best from ChatGPT ads, and a sharp card that sends people to a vague homepage wastes the click.

The paid slot and the answer are two separate games. A mention inside the answer comes from organic work, which our explainer on how ChatGPT picks its sources covers, and that work sits at the core of a generative engine optimisation service.

Which Malaysian Businesses Can Run ChatGPT Ads Today

Fewer than you'd expect. OpenAI's Ad Policies rule out some categories in every market:

  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Gambling
  • Political ads
  • Adult content

The bigger local catch applies outside the US, where financial services and health services ads are generally prohibited and legal services ads are currently prohibited. In practice, most Malaysian banks, insurers, clinics and law firms are out for now.

Property needs care too. Ads for individual job listings or housing rentals or sales are prohibited, although listing platforms can advertise if neither the ad nor its landing page references a specific listing. If you're a developer or agent, assume ads for your own units for sale or rent are covered by the ban.

So who's left? Our picks for the strongest early fits:

  • E-commerce and retail, where shoppers already ask ChatGPT for comparisons and gift ideas
  • Travel and hospitality, since trip planning is a long conversation with a clear budget
  • F&B outlets that diners ask about by area and occasion
  • SaaS and B2B software
  • Education providers fielding questions on courses, fees and intakes

Should Your Business Test ChatGPT Ads Now

If you're in an eligible category, our honest answer is yes, but keep it small. New ad platforms tend to be less crowded in their first months, before larger advertisers move budget across. It's judgment, not data, and it's why we'd want to learn the format early.

Here's what we'd do first:

  • Pick one product or service with a clear price and a clear buyer
  • Fix the landing page before spending a ringgit on the card
  • Write copy for Malay and mixed Malay-English prompts as well as English
  • Judge results on enquiries and sales, not clicks

We'd also keep Google Ads running as normal. In our view, search still brings in the bulk of paid enquiries for most Malaysian businesses, and ChatGPT Ads reach a smaller slice of buyers at a later stage. Let your own numbers decide how far to push the new one.

A sponsored card and a mention inside the answer sit on the same screen, and a brand can hold both. Cleverus is an AI search agency in Malaysia working on the answer side today. Want to know if ChatGPT Ads fit your business? Talk to Cleverus about a ChatGPT Ads readiness check.

FAQs on ChatGPT Ads in Malaysia

  • Are ChatGPT Ads available in Malaysia?

Yes. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in Malaysia on 23 September 2026, as part of a seven-market rollout across Southeast Asia and Taiwan. Eligible businesses can sign up through the self-serve platform at ads.openai.com, and the ads show to people on the Free and Go plans.

  • Can I stop seeing ads on ChatGPT?

Yes. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans are all ad-free. Free users can also switch to Ads-Free, which removes ads but comes with lower usage limits and reduced feature access. You can also turn off ads personalisation, but that does not stop ads. Contextual ads based on your current chat still show.

  • Do ChatGPT Ads change the answers ChatGPT gives?

No. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and run on separate systems from the chat model. The sponsored card sits below the response, labelled and visually separate. An ad buys a spot under the answer. It doesn't buy a mention inside it.
